  • Traditional Gifts for Shabbat

Shabbat is traditionally the seventh day of rest for followers of Judaism as ordained by God in the Ten Commandments. Tradition has it that God rested on the seventh day after creating the universe. The weekly Shabbat holds a lot of significance for Jews. It starts on sunset on Friday and lasts till the appearance of the three stars in the sky on Saturday night.

Shabbat has a rich tradition and is primarily a day of rest and spiritual enrichment. It is the day when one puts aside work and spends time with the family. Ordinarily items used on Shabbat are ideal gifts for Shabbat. These include lovely Kiddush cups which can be used for Kiddush or blessing over the Shabbat wine. This ceremony is performed by the man of the family.

One can also gift a tray for holding Kiddush cups. Another item which is considered appropriate for Shabbat is candlesticks. Custom is that two candles are lit by the oldest woman in the house before the sun sets on Friday, that is, Shabbat Eve. A match box holder is another useful item that is used during Shabbat and adds to the beauty of the Shabbat table.

Challot or challah, the braided Jewish bread also forms a part of Shabbat traditions and challah boards, challah covers and challah knives will be a utilitarian addition to any Jewish home. In addition to this one can gift washing cups that are made of silver, bronze or even plastic. Then there are Havdalah candles which are different from Shabbat candles in the sense that they are taller and braided with a series of wicks. Havdalah candles are lit when the sun sets on Shabbat. Other than this there are mezuzahs made of glass, silver or ceramic. Tradition demands that a mezuzah containing a scroll of prayers be placed at the entrance of the house and every room. Yet another gift that would be appreciated is Jewish placards with Jewish prayers inscribed on it or one can gift Israel art which may be treasured as a piece of art.

Flowers may be gifted but this should be before sunset on Shabbat eve as putting the flowers in water after that is not possible. Normally any gift that can be of use in the household such as a bowl, cup, books and so on are suitable gifts that can be given on Shabbat. One can easily search online for Judaic gifts.
